Downloading Kali Linux .iso file and creating a new virtual machine

This Tutorial is how to set up Kali Linux on Oracle Virtual box using a .iso file.

Begin:

Go to Get Kali | Kali Linux and navigate to Installer Images. You can also use the virtual machines download however, the .iso file has always worked for me without issue.

Next: Click on the Complete installer download button. Your downloads file should be a .iso file.

Once Kali .iso file is complete, go into Virtual Box and click New

Name your Machine, I just went with KALI. Next select Linux as Type, and Subtype is Debian. Leave the rest of the settings and go into Hardware next.

In Hardware you need to select a Base Memory. This is dependent on your own computer specs. It is recommended to at least use 4GB for a smooth operation.

The Processors used are also dependent on your own host machine specs. The rule of thumb is to use half of your processors. I have 8 core processors so I selected 4.

Next click on Hard Disk and select how much space to use on the C drive. I left this part default and clicked finish. The virtual box will start up automatically and ask for you to make a selection, select Graphical Install and follow the instructions.

You can leave the hostname as Kali and continue. Leave the domain name blank and click continue. Next it will take you to the set up users and passwords field. I used my own name for the user, and then typed in my password. This is used to log into the machine.

In the partition disk fields make sure the Guided – use entire disk is selected and hit continue. On the next page keep the All files in one partition (recommended for new users) selected and click continue.

In the select software screen, leave everything as default and click continue.

Next you will be asked to install the GRUB boot loader, select yes and continue. On the next page select the correct harddisk and click continue. Kali will continue installing and then ask you to reboot, click continue. Once the machine is done rebooting it will bring up a screen where you select Kali GNU and hit enter.

Finally, you will type in your username and password to log into the system. Kali is now set up.
